Stravinsky's neo-classical masterpiece asks many questions about the desire for wealth vs. honor and what we sacrifice in the quest for power and freedom. The piece also presents a powerful view of society in moral decay. American director Lydia Steier returns to Theater Basel to capitalize on her great success there with 2016's critically acclaimed production of Stockhausen's Donnerstag aus Licht, taking on the monumental challenge of The Rake's Progress. Conducted by Kristiina Poska, the cast includes American soprano Hailey Clark as Anne Trulove, Deutsche Oper Berlin ensemble member Matthew Newlin as Tom Rakewell, Eve-Maud Hubeaux as Baba the Turk, and Seth Carico appears as the devilish Nick Shadow.
