György Ligeti’s only opera Le grand Macabre has been confounding and entertaining audiences consistently since its world premiere in 1978. With it’s shocking orchestral forces and impossibly sarcastic cast of absurd characters, this piece supposes what might happen if humanity was faced with its imminent demise. What chaos would ensue, and what if, in the end, it didn’t happen? Or did it? Seth appears as the masochistic astronomer, Astramadors, alongside Heidi Melton as Mescalina and Martin Winkler as the Nekrotzar. James Gaffigan will conduct the Radio Filharmonisch Orkest in the Main Hall of the Royal Concertgebouw Amsterdam.
